IRA WILLIAM GOOD On April 11, 2001, Ira passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre after a brief illness. At age 83, he was grateful for the robust health he enjoyed to the time of his passing. Ira fondly recalled the many and diverse highlights of his life which he shared with family, friends, business associates, church members and political comrades. Those who knew him admired his simple and direct generosity of spirit, personal warmth, respect and concern for others and the quiet dignity with which he bore himself. These gentle characteristics did not stand in the way of Ira forcefully expressing his opinions on a variety of subjects, particularly his principled positions on politics and religion. He was born on January 11, 1918 in Kitchener, Ont., the son of Jacob and Wilhelmina Good. He received his primary and secondary education in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Before the war, he began his business career with B.F. Goodrich of Canada, which was interrupted by his service overseas with the Canadian Army. Upon his return to Canada in 1946, he occupied a number of sales and sales management positions in the shoe business before becoming a manufacturers agent in 1977. Since then, until only a few years ago, he continued his business activities. He was strongly committed to church affairs which included service on the Board of the Donnelly United Church. Always interested in matters of public policy, he undertook numerous volunteer roles in the Liberal Party which resulted in his being awarded an honorary lifetime membership. Although involved in the broader community and what was happening in his country, Ira was especially devoted to his loyal wife Ruth, who now survives him and with whom he enjoyed love and friendship for over 59 years. He was proud and supportive of his three children, Richard (Lisa), Christopher (Lenore) and Carolyn (Dave) Walker and their spouses. He was particularly affectionate towards and concerned about the lives of his three grandchildren, Kristin and Karen Good and Carla Walker, who were his window to the future. Also surviving him are his sister Ruth Jutzi, and his brother Earl. The family salutes the wonderful efforts and support of the staff of the Urgent Care Department of Misericordia Hospital and of the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Health Sciences Centre. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Donnelly United Church, 1226 Waller Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Donnelly United Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
