JOHN ZAIKOW Suddenly, but quietly, after a brief illness, on April 12, 2001, with daughters at his side, John passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 76. Dad was born and educated in Pleasant Home, Man., near Komarno. He left home at age 16 and worked as a farm hand in Manitoba and Alberta making his way to British Columbia to work the copper mines. Dad joined the Merchant Marines in 1943 sailing the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans until 1947. In business Dad formed Belco Painting and Decorating and developed an interest in commercial real estate and formed Eagle Development & Investments Ltd. He was a member of the Elmwood Kiwanis for 20 years and served as Treasurer and President during that time. He also served on the Board of Directors at Holy Family Nursing Home for 6 years. All of his adult life, Dad was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed bowling, curling, fishing and became an avid golfer. He was thrilled to get a "hole in one" in the fall of 1999. Dad also enjoyed watching hockey and football and was a Blue Bomber season ticket holder for over 50 years. Dad is lovingly remembered and missed by daughters, Gail Zaikow and Glenys Krotch and son-in-law Ken; by sisters, Anne Johnston and Mary Kopec and brothers, Mike and Jim; numerous nieces and nephews and by two step-sons and two step-granddaughters. Dad was predeceased by his first wife Anne in 1971 and by second wife Ollie in 1999 and by brothers, Pete and Bill. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 18 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Glen Eden Reception Centre. A private family interment will be held at a later date in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Manitoba Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN STREET 338-7111
