FRIEDRICH (FRED) WANKE On April 14, 2001 at the age of 84, Fred passed away at the Victoria General Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Irma; son Siegfried (Charlotte) daughter Ursula Klym (Michael) grandchildren, Michael (Selma), David, Peter, Katie and great-grandchildren, Morgan and Sarah. He also leaves to mourn nieces and nephews in Canada and in Germany as well as numerous friends. Fred was born on January 2, 1917 to Ewald and Holdine Wanke while in Russian captivity. He was raised and educated in Poland and baptized and confirmed in his belief in 1931. Fred met Irma in July 1940 and they were married in September of the same year. The family immigrated to Canada in 1949. Opa (as he was lovingly called after the birth of his first grandson) started his construction career with Weinbender Construction and ended in the maintenance department at Smith Agencies, retiring from there in 1989. Opa was a kind and gentle man. His greatest loves were his family and his cottage at Red Rock Lake. Opa worked tirelessly for his family, always ready to help with any projects. His happiest times were spent at the cottage, visiting with family and friends. A time of visitation with friends will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. 1 and Navin Rd. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19 also at Green Acres with interment to follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends may make a donation to a charity of their choice. The Wanke family wish to extend a thank you to Dr. Pacin and the 3rd floor nursing staff at the Victoria Hospital for all their care and compassion. Rest in Peace Opa We love you and will miss you.
