Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEAN YOUNG MITCHELL (nee RANKIN) Jean Young Mitchell (nee Rankin) of Carberry, MB passed away peacefully at the Carberry Personal Care Home on April 16, 2001. Daughter of George and Isabella Rankin born at Oakner, MB on May 1, 1904. After attending Oakner and Hamiota schools and Brandon Normal School, she taught at Ingelow, MB. Jean married Dougal Roy Mitchell of Ingelow on July 28, 1926. Their children were Ken (Helen) of Brookdale, Lloyd (Helen) of Winnipeg, Sheila (Bill Claridge) of Brandon and Beryl (deceased in infancy), as well as eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Phyllis Rankin of Winnipeg and John (Gertrude) of Hamiota. She was predeceased by husband Dougal (1983) sisters, Mabel Kennedy (1988) and Esther Winckler (2000) and brother Charles in infancy. Doug and Jean farmed in Ingelow and Brookdale areas all their married lives. Jean moved to the town of Brookdale in 1983, and to Carberry in 1995. In January 2001, she moved to the Carberry Personal Care Home. She had many achievements being a member of Oakner, Ingelow and Brookdale churches and was Sunday School superintendent for many years. She was president of the WMS and first president and life member of Brookdale UCK. Since music was one of her joys she was a member of the Brookdale United Church choir for 40 years and choir leader for 20 years. When the Brookdale Good Neighbours formed in 1977 she was a charter member and helped them compile the Brookdale history book in 1987. Gardening, growing and arranging flowers, and quilting were her hobbies but she finally realized her passion at the age of 70 when she took her first painting lessons. She has given pleasure to many with her paintings of wild flowers, birds and harvest scenes and her crocus paintings can be found all over the world. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held in the Brookdale Hall on April 19 with Rev. George Cargo officiating. Interment was in the Brookdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Huntington Society of Canada, 151 Frederick St., Suite 400, Kitchener, ON N2H 2M2 or a charity of your choice. Whites Funeral Home, Neepawa-Carberry in care of arrangements.
