F/LT STANLEY JOHN KERNAGHAN A.F.C., D.F.M. Stanley John Kernaghan passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on April 16, 2001, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. By his side for 53 years and right to the end was his loving bride and soulmate Agnes. Stan leaves behind a devoted family including his wife Agnes and their five children: Josie, Karen (Jason), Patti (Pierre), Darcy (Heidi), Jennie (Foad) and eight grandchildren: Alexis, Nikolai, Neisha, Joseph, Veronika, Katrina, Joshua, and Dominic. Stan is also survived by his sister-in-law Helen and brothers-in-law Roy and Russ. He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Ruby Kernaghan, his sisters Edna and Hazel, his brother Samuel, and his brother-in-law Walter. Born in Cartwright, Man., May 30, 1921, Stan enlisted in the RCAF in December 1940 and flew for the RAF from December 1941 to October 1943. From December 1943 to August 1945 he was a Staff Pilot and Mosquito Aircraft Instructor in Eastern Canada. He was highly decorated for his active duty in North Africa. Stan and Agnes were married in 1947 and resided in Winnipeg until 1970, when the family moved to Vancouver. Stans professional career spanned over 50 years where he was known as a mentor and leader in the insurance industry. In 1953 he started building his own company. Stans vision was to provide superior adjusting service across Canada. This dream was realized in 1969, when the company became the first privately owned national independent adjusting firm in Canada. Kernaghan Adjusters is still thriving today. Stans many accomplishments include: Past President of the Vancouver Rotary Club, Chairman and board member for St. Davids United Church, Past President and board member for G.F. Strong and Pearson Hospital, Past President of the Air Force Officers Association and member of the Wartime Pilots Association. His industry activities include the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose International in Manitoba and British Columbia, and the Insurance Adjusters Association. Special thanks to Dr. Nicholas Bruchovsky, Dr. Kim Chi, and Dr. Stan Lubin for their many years of expert medical attention and support to Stan. Always a leader in his community, he was the guiding light for his family and gave countless hours serving others. His strength and generosity will live with us always. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at St. Davids United Church, 1525 Taylor Way, West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Stanley John Kernaghan to the Prostate Research Fund at the BC Cancer Agency.
