DR. REGINALD WESTON WHETTER Dr. Reginald Weston Whetter born August 19, 1906 in Dand, MB, died April 21, 2001 in Chilliwack General Hospital. A much loved and respected physician and surgeon who had a long and interesting life in the world of medicine. He graduated from Wesley College, Winnipeg, in 1932 in the top ten of his class and started his medical practice in Vita, MB as an assistant to Dr. Harold Waldon. In 1935 he was invited to practice in Steinbach, MB where the district promised to build a new hospital, and practiced there for 20 years. He was also Coroner there for 18 years as well as District Health Officer. He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association in 1954; but shortly after decided to move to Chilliwack, BC and went into partnership with a former classmate Dr. John Grandy. In 1972 they sold their practice and for many years Reg did locums in Northern BC, the NWT, the Queen Charlotte Islands and the high Arctic centering at Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island where he was consultant and helper to six outpost nursing stations. He officially retired in 1985 after over 50 years in medicine. He was a life member of the Canadian Medical Association and of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Reg was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Ruth (Waldon). He is survived by his loving wife Valerie (May) son Murray (Grace) of Gibsons Landing, and son Dr. Alan (Gail) of Chilliwack; five grandchildren, Dr. Christine Whetter of Ottawa, ON, Rob Whetter of Vancouver, Arlene and Leanne Whetter of Vancouver, and Dr. Kevin Whetter of Saskatoon, SK, as well as numerous nieces and nephews; three brothers, Jack (Donalda) of Hartney, MB, Rev. William (Gertrude) of Winnipeg, MB and Clinton (Dorothy) of Dand, MB. Reg was outgoing and loved people, he was a keen duck hunter, golfer and curler and a member of the Chilliwack Field Naturalists Club, The Chilliwack Camera Club, the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society, Chilliwack Curling Club, Chilliwack Golf and Country Club and the Cultus Lake O.A.P.A. #164. A special thanks to Drs. H. Bright and A. Richmond. A service of remembrance is to be held at the Chilliwack United Church where he was a longtime member, on Saturday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m. Should family and friends so desire, donations in his memory may be made to the United Church Memorial Fund or a charity of choice.
