DR. ALFRED MALCOLM GRANT 1914 - 2001 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the death of Alfred Malcolm Grant on April 22, 2001, in his 87th year. Alfred will be missed by his beloved wife, Frances, daughters Catherine Noton and Patricia Grant-Bloxom; sons-in-law Mark Noton and Bob Bloxom; grandchildren Charles, Jane, and Steven Noton; Grant, Jacqueline, and Caitlin Bloxom. He is also survived by his nephew Grant Robinson. Alfred was predeceased by his son David (1976) and his sister Thora (1994). He was a devoted husband and father who cherished his grandchildren. Alfreds caring and supportive nature will forever be in their hearts. Alfred was born in Haverhill, Suffolk, England on August 2, 1914. After his fathers death in 1919, he moved with his family from Roblin, Man. to Winnipeg. Alf received his education in various schools and graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine in 1938. After graduation, Alfred worked briefly at the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage La Prairie and the Ninette Sanatorium mobile clinic. He began private practice in Souris in 1939 as a family physician and surgeon. In 1940, Alfred was posted to the No. 17 Souris Flying Training School as a lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp. With his practice in town and calls to the airport to treat injuries, this was the busiest time of Alfreds career. In 1968, Alf received membership into the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He was a trustee on the Souris Valley School Board, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Souris Elks, and the Masonic Lodge. He was an avid reader, with a keen interest in astronomy and the space age. He enjoyed golfing, bridge, and being with his friends. After semi-retirement in 1977, Alfred became a snowbird, vacationing in Florida and California where his family joined him for holidays every year. Alfred retired from medicine in 1995 at 80 years of age after 56 years of practice. In the past three years, walks became a major part of Alfreds daily routine, and he took great pleasure in greeting people and stopping to chat with them. He had a wealth of friends and he valued these friendships greatly. He will be remembered for his kind, gentle, and humourous manner and for his years of compassionate and dedicated service to the people of Souris and the surrounding area. A memorial service was held at the St. Pauls United Church on Thursday, April 26, with an honor guard from the Royal Canadian Legion in attendance. Interment was at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Brandon. Rev. Ray McMullan of the Anglican Church officiated. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Cram, Dr. Herbst and the staff at the Souris Hospital and the Brandon Regional Health Centre for the care that Alf received. If friends so wish, donations in memory of Alfred may be made to the charity of their choice.
