HUGH WOODROFFE SUTHERLAND Our family sadly announces the quiet passing of Hugh, aged 86, at Golden West Centennial Lodge in Winnipeg. Beloved husband of Marian (Pidlubny) father of Hugh (Denise), Ian (Judy) and Muriel; and brother of Jack (Mary-Louise) and Marjorie Holdship. Hugh was predeceased by his first wife, Jocelyn Muriel (Campbell) his brother Gordon and Gordons wife Dorothy; and brother-in-law Joe Holdship. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Rusty (Tammy), Dominique, Derek, Hugh (Leanora), James (Esther), Chantal, Christine and Neil; his two great-grandchildren, Sean and Jason; other relatives, Diane Gignac, Jeff Gidney; and many nieces and nephews. Hell be especially missed by his canine companion Woodie. Hugh was born in Selkirk, MB, graduated from St. Johns High School in Winnipeg and articled with Price Waterhouse in Winnipeg, receiving the silver medal on his Chartered Accountancy exams. He joined the Hudsons Bay Company in 1940 as a trainee in the Canadian Committee Office and later that year enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force serving with distinction until 1945. He returned to HBC in Winnipeg, advancing through the ranks in the Fur Trade Department. He was appointed Assistant General Manger in Montreal in 1953, General Manager, NSD in Winnipeg in 1958, President, Rupertsland Trading Company in 1963 and in 1964, Deputy Managing Director with responsibility for NSD, Wholesale, Fur Sales, Rupertsland Trading Company and President, Morgans Department Stores in Montreal. In 1970, he returned to Winnipeg as Senior Vice-President and Director of HBC. He retired in 1976 and spent many wonderful years with Marian in Tuxedo. While in Montreal, Hugh was on the Board of The Montreal General Hospital Foundation, and in Winnipeg, he was active in the Boy Scouts of Canada, The Council for Canadian Unity, St. Johns Ambulance, the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities Foundation, St. Georges Anglican Church and was Chairman of the Victoria General Hospital Foundation. Hugh had a keen sense of humour, loved family gatherings and joking with fellow Company employees and customers. He was a skilled accountant and a creative businessman. He took great pride in the development of the Inuit art form, the fur trade and their marketing internationally. He enjoyed his extensive travel in the Canadian North and many former store managers still remember his visits fondly. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Hugh, Thursday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, in Winnipeg. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for the loving care provided by the 4th floor staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge and to his dedicated caregiver, Lucjan Burakowski. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that donations be made in Hughs name to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg MB.
