MARY BERGEN Early Tuesday morning, May 8, 2001, our loving Heavenly Father released our beloved mother from her struggle with brain cancer. She fought hard, she fought well, with courage and dignity. Mom was born November 29, 1923 in Winkler, Manitoba to Cornelius and Maria (Peters) Martens. Upon profession of faith Mom was baptized in First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg in the spring of 1945. On November 17, 1945 mom was married to our father, Abraham M. Bergen, and together began farming in the Fannystelle area. In April of 1953, our parents moved to Starbuck and Mom resided on the same farm until her passing. Moms passions were her home and family. She enjoyed gardening and exploring her creative bent in sewing, crocheting and knitting, often having several projects in progress simultaneously. She spent many hours, especially during the long winter months, reading and putting together jigsaw puzzles. Left to mourn Moms passing are her children, Linda (Abe) Dyck of Plum Coulee; Ed (Ruth) Bergen of Sanford; Rita Bergen of Winnipeg; Carol Bergen of Calgary, Alberta and Jack (Cheryl) Bergen of Starbuck; also ten grandchildren, Tony and wife Kim, Loresa, Marco, Leslie and husband Chad, Janine and husband Peter, Christy, Tim, Myrio, Mark and Joyelle as well as five great-grandchildren, Sydney, Kaylee, Brayden, Mackenzie, and Jade. Also left to mourn are one sister Ann (Wilbert) Chapman of Brandon and one brother Peter (Hilda) Martens of Fannystelle along with in-laws, Victor and Anna Schmidt, Bertha Neudorf, John and Anne Bergen, Jake and Mary Bergen, Peter and Freda Bergen, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years Abraham M. Bergen in 1994; infant daughter Doreen in 1963; her parents, Cornelius and Maria Martens, and sister Lydia Martens. A memorial service for Mary Bergen will be celebrated on Friday, May 11 at 2:30 p.m. at Springstein Mennonite Church, Springstein, Manitoba, with viewing in the church prior to the interment at 1:30 p.m. Viewing will also take place on Thursday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Highway. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to be made to cancer research at Cancer Care Manitoba ON 109, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, R3E 0V9, or to the Springstein Mennonite Church, designated to Springstein MCC Blanket Club, Springstein, Manitoba, R0G 2N0. With gratitude we acknowledge the incredible patience and compassion of the nurses and other health care workers on the 3rd and 4th floors at Grace General Hospital. God bless you all! To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die... Eccl.3:1,2 Arrangements entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
