Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEARL BALFOUR MERRIFIELD Peacefully on Friday, May 11, 2001 at the West Park Manor Personal Care Home, Earl passed away at the age of 77 years. Earl will be missed by his son, James, daughter-in-law Karen, granddaughter Jodi, and grandson Clayton, and one niece, Geraldine and family in Vancouver. He was predeceased by his father Peter (Earl was two years old), his mother Margaret, his mentor, his sister Anne, and his loving wife of 50 years, Doreen. He was born on Selkirk Avenue in Winnipeg on August 23, 1923. He grew up in the West End with numerous visits to his grandfathers dairy farm (Manitoba Avenue West). His first job was as a telegraph delivery boy advancing to an apprenticeship jewelry job at Eatons, where he made some life long friends. When the war broke out he joined the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corp. In his trade as a driver, Earl worked in many European countries. When he returned from the war service he met Doreen Arnott and they were married on July 27, 1946. He hired on at C.P. Rail August 17, 1947 where he worked for 37 years, retiring as a U.T.U Yard Foreman Switch Crew in February, 1985. Earl was a member of Fort Rouge Legion for over 30 years, where with his wife Doreen they enjoyed many a Saturday night dance. A private family interment will be held in Garry Memorial Park, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. with a memorial service on Tuesday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the West Park Manor Personal Care Home Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor, 3199 Grant Ave. A gathering of family and friends will follow. The family wishes to thank the staff at West Park Manor and a special thank-you to the nurses and support staff on 2S.
