NORMAN ERNEST JOHNSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather Norman Ernest Johnson at his residence on May 16, 2001. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn; his daughter Lorraine Ferguson; his grandson David Trachtenberg; three brothers, Carl, Art and Henry; and two sisters in infancy. He leaves to mourn his son Donald and wife Wilma; his daughter Catherine Trachtenberg and husband Brian Schwimmer; grandchildren, Elizabeth-Anne, Erica and Alison Johnson, Matthew, Stephen and Aaron Trachtenberg, Heather Young, Robert and Michael Ferguson; and four great-grandchildren, Jonathon Young, and Quinn, Kelly and Lindsay Ferguson. Norman is also survived by his brother Len; and numerous nieces and their families. Norman was born in Winnipeg on May 12, 1917, eldest son of Gudmundur and Lena Johnson. He attended Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntyre schools. An enterprising young man, his many jobs included caddying, selling golf balls, working on the farm, delivering Coca Cola, and stringing wire for the CPR. During the war he enlisted in the R.C.A.F., trained in Montreal as a wireless instructor, and was stationed in Gander. After the war he returned to the CPR, sold real estate and retired in 1977. Norman and Evelyn were married in 1948 and had a long and happy marriage. Raising their children in a neighbourhood full of young families led to many lasting friendships. During Evelyns long illness, Norman was an exceptionally devoted partner. After her death in 1991 he found comfort in special times with his grandchildren. Extremely interested in his Icelandic heritage, Norman enjoyed researching his family tree. He also enjoyed travelling and visiting friends and family in Canada and the USA. During these travels he met new friends who became an important part of his life. He will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish may make a donation in his memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, 4th Floor, 141 Bannatyne Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0R3, 943-9595.
