Date of Passing: May 16, 2001
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS WILLIAM HUGHESMAN Douglas William Hughesman passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre on May 16, 2001 at the age of 57 years, after a valiant 18-month fight against cancer. Beloved husband of Yvonne and respected father of Curtis, Doug is survived by countless family, friends, and business colleagues who will all miss his sage advice, friendly handshakes and graceful generosity. As a youngster born in Winnipeg, his talents for hockey and enthusiasm for life transcended into his career story a truly inspiring "from the mailroom-to-the-boardroom" chronicle. Before reaching his career pinnacle as the C.E.O. and President of Renfrew Thompson Insurance here in Calgary, Doug began his career in the mailroom of Canadian Indemnity in Winnipeg in 1962. Two years later, Doug had already been promoted from mailboy to Field Representative. With his persevering dedication and perceptive instinct for opportunity, Doug transferred to Calgary in 1964 and shortly thereafter joined what is known today as Renfrew Thompson Insurance. Not forgetting his sweetheart back in Winnipeg that he had known from the age of 12, Doug married his lovely and spunky wife Yvonne in 1965 and the couple began building their family, careers and circle of friends here. Through committed hard work, Doug earned the esteemed insurance designations FIIC and CCIB, while still finding time to volunteer with the Salvation Army and to serve on the Board of the Hope Lutheran Church. In 1974, Doug and Yvonne became parents to Curtis, who became the apple of his eye. He was known to call during the day to ensure that Curtis sunbonnet had a wide enough brim. Dougs careful advice and guiding honesty will be missed by Curtis, who followed his dads vigilant belief in education and generosity. Doug enjoyed being a meticulous woodworker, extraordinary gardener, and remarkable golfer. He had a marvellous flair and special word for everyone whom he made to feel uniquely important. Doug and Yvonne celebrated each of their 35 years of a truly model marriage with unique surprises of custom jewelry, romantic dinners and exquisite parties that would honour every romantics dream. In the spirit of Dougs passion for sharing good times, Doug and Yvonne took many trips with their parents, family and business associates. After achieving such respected success as a son, brother, husband, father, and business leader, Dougs simple but accurate philosophy of life "to be a good person, because thats all you can be" has profoundly resonated with all of those to whom he showered his love and generosity. Earlier this year, Doug and Yvonne enjoyed sharing one of many memorable vacations at their Maui vista with adored friends, along with Curtis and his fiancee Catherine. Dougs inspiring success chronicle will be revered by his family who survive him: his brother and sister-in-law Jack and Marlene Hughesman, brother Rev. Dave Hughesman, sister and brother-in-law Diane and Bob Wilson, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Chris Hughesman, sister and brother-in-law Bernice and Clifford Smith, sister-in-law Norma Mitterndorffer, sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Bill Lalchun; nieces and nephews, Corinne, John, Russell, Chris, Danny, Donald, Cindy, Michelle, William, Andrew, Michael, Clifford Jr., Cindy, Charles, Leslie, Gary, Donna and Sandy. At the familys request, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Childrens Wish Foundation, Rosedale Hospice, or Rockyview General Hospital, Special Care Counselling. Special thanks to Dr. E. Heslop, Unit 57, Unit 47, and the Palliative Team of the Tom Baker Centre. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church, 3527 Boulton Rd. N.W., Calgary, AB. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to McInnis & Holloway, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB. (403) 241-0044.
