Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAUGUST JOHN (GUS) GELOWITZ In his 76th year and formerly of The Pas, MB, August passed away peacefully at Pioneer Lodge in Ituna, SK, on Saturday, May 19, 2001. Gus was predeceased by his parents, John G. and Eva (nee Hornung) Gelowitz; his loving wife of 46 years, Christine (Tina) in April 1998; his sister Maize; his brother and sister-in-law Jack (Francis) Gelowitz; two nieces, Rita Daenekaert and Sandy Streifel; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael Hornung, Doris Appel and Pidy Streifel. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Sheila (Brian) of The Pas, Dori (Derek) of Winnipeg, MB, and Lyle (Margarita) of Mississauga, ON; son-in-law Wayne of The Pas; his six grandchildren, Dale (Nicole) of Airdrie, AB, Kimberley (Derek), Jessica and Mark of The Pas, Mathew and Laura of Mississauga; and two great-grandchildren, Mitchel of The Pas and Erica of Airdrie, who will always cherish Grandpas memory; his mother-in-law Mary Gelowitz of Ituna; sisters, Madelene Gelowitz and Mary (Willard) Ponask of Regina, Margaret (Don) Ponask of Crooked Lake; and his brothers, Tony (Evelyn) of Regina and Fred (Kaye) of Langley, BC; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul Streifel of Melville, Chris Appell of Grayson, SK, Sam (Hilda) Streifel of Grayson, Wendell (Bernice) Streifel of Grayson, Mary (Manny) Ross of Winnipeg, Agnes Peace of Regina, Barbara Hornung of Grayson, Glenda Streifel of Gillam, MB, and Wilma (Al) Beutel of Mississauga; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Gus was born, schooled and married in Grayson. At the time of his marriage he was employed at Morrison Motors in Melville. In 1955 he moved to The Pas where he began his career at Carroll Motors until his retirement in 1981. Gus was committed to and actively involved in his community. He served as Chairperson for The Pas Health Complex hospital board, town councillor and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He particularly enjoyed the fellowship of all his bridge friends. Guss faith was very important to him, and he was a fully active board member and choir director at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. Gus was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His legacy will always endure in each of our hearts. Loving and patient in all his ways Upright and just to the end of his days Sincere and kind in heart and mind What beautiful memories he left behind Prayers were said Wednesday, May 23 at St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Grayson, with Doug Parislau as the presider. The organist, Diana Hornung, and Allan Gelowitz led in the hymns, "Be Not Afraid," "Jesus Remember Me," and "Lord Of The Dance." Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, May 24 at St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Grayson, with the Rev. Fr. John Moriarty as the celebrant. The readers were Darren Hornung, Margarita Gelowitz, and Madelene Gelowitz. The gift bearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Don Ponask, Wilma Beutel, Mary Ross, and Barbara Hornung served as Eucharistic Ministers. The altar servers were Paylor Broda, Riley Ottenbreit, Heather Zimmer, and Jordan Haas. The organist, Gloria Lesko, and the choir led in the hymns, "City of God," "On Eagles Wings," "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman," and "How Great Thou Art." The Knights of Columbus attended in a group and formed an honour guard. Interment followed in St. Marys Parish Cemetery with Stuart Ponask, Warren Ponask, Martin Ponask, Wayne Gelowitz, Marlene Gelowitz, and Greg Ratkovich as active pallbearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
