MARY BELLE JAFFRAY It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and sister, Mary Belle Jaffray, on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Concordia Hospital. Following a lengthy struggle with congestive heart failure, Mary died peacefully surrounded by her adoring family. Mary will be sadly missed by her daughters, Elaine Spencer (Jim) and Marylyn Mohninger (Mel), and son Clair McKerchar (Lynda). Mom is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased in February 2001 by her dear husband of 33 years, Tom Jaffray; her beloved son Don in 1992; and brother Jim (Vera) passed away in 1990. Her first husband, Finlay McKerchar, died in 1965 after 21 happy years together. Mary was the eldest daughter of John and Violet Gard of Winnipeg. Brothers and sister include John (Mary), Frank (June, died February 2001), Bob (Myrtle), Eileen and Mike (Lois). Mary was born June 17, 1923, in Fisherton, MB. After moving to Winnipeg with her family, Mary received her education at St. James Collegiate and later at the University of Winnipeg where she earned her B.A and B.Ed. Most of her teaching career was spent with Winnipeg School Division and culminated at Ellen Douglas School, where she was the beloved teacher of many physically and developmentally challenged students. Many kept in touch long after her retirement in 1978. Mary also enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, scrabble, entertaining family and friends and above all - shopping. Nothing pleased her more than a bargain, unless perhaps a good joke! Mom dearly loved her grandchildren and enriched their lives with her time, attention and sense of humour. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Saviors Anglican Church, S.E. Munroe Street at Grey, Winnipeg. Viewing will be Monday, May 28 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg MB, R3B 2H8 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg MB R3C 0S6 would be appreciated. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. A. Kong and the wonderful nursing staff on 3E at Concordia Hospital, for their kind and loving care of our dear mom.
