HAROLD MACKLEM On Thursday, May 24, 2001, Harold passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 92 years. Harold was born in Cartwright, Manitoba on January 19, 1909, the second youngest in a family of six boys and three girls. He was brought up by his older sisters after the deaths of his parents, Marshall and Alice, in his early teens. He completed high school in Cartwright, and worked in the area until moving to Winnipeg in 1938. At the onset of the Second World War, he joined the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, and went overseas in 1939, serving until the end of the war. While in England, he married Esther Lathan of Newcastle upon Tyne and they had one daughter, Helen Dorothy. Esther and Helen journeyed from England to join him back in Winnipeg in 1946. Harold worked in the Winnipeg Post Office from 1945 to 1973, where his memory for names and places was a great asset in the days before mechanized mail sorting. After retirement, he took up genealogy, traced the Macklem family history for 200 years, and made contact with far-flung relatives. Sports were his greatest interest, especially curling and baseball. He was a life member and past president of Civic Caledonian Curling Club. He also bowled with the Orange League in his seventies. Hucks easygoing and unassuming personality was appreciated by friends and acquaintances throughout his life. He leaves his daughter Helen, son-in-law Bob Nation, nieces Lily Robinson of Winnipeg, and Ruth Robles of San Mateo, California, nephew Percy Macklem of Vancouver, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Avenue, Aubrey Street entrance. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Deer Lodge Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg R3J 0L3. Special thanks for attentive and loving care to the staff of the Manitoba Oddfellows Personal Care Home, July 1993 to February 1997, and to the staff on Tower 7, Deer Lodge Centre, since February 1997.
