CHARLES ARCHIBALD (ARCHIE) FRANK BUTT (1920-2001) Great-grandfather, grandfather, father, uncle and husband passed away suddenly and peacefully on Sunday May 20, 2001. Archie dreamt for months of taking the train to BC. He left on his last joyful train journey on May 18th to Duncan, BC were he died. He is survived by his family Cynthia, Judy (Bob), Lindsay, Sue(Danielle), Pam (Tom). Grandchildren, Lora (Brad), Kim (Wade), Kerry, Michael (Melissa), Tamera and Trevor. Great-grandchildren, Kellen, Colby, Riley, Liam, Josie, Tessa and Isabella. His special nieces and nephews will miss him. Born in April 1920 on the homestead, near Runnymede, SK, where he grew up with his parents Frank and Rose Catherine Butt and sisters Kathleen and Mildred. In September 1940, after the harvest, Archie caught a freight train to Winnipeg where he worked at Codvilles for $15 a week. During the war Archie was a Trooper for the X11 Manitoba Dragoons. He trained in wireless, gunnery, driving and maintenance of the Staghound armoured cars. His troop patrolled the West Coast before being sent overseas to England. His troop was involved in the liberation of Ostende, Holland. Archie met Cynthia in 1942 and they married in Winnipeg December 1946. They lived in Kamsack, SK until the early 1960s when they returned to Winnipeg with their four children. Always very involved in community work, Archie served as President of the Kamsack Legion #24 and many positions with Charleswood Legion #100. He volunteered for the Anglican Church, was elected to the school board, joined the Fort Garry Horse Militia and was very involved in the X11 Manitoba Dragoons Veterans Association. He worked for the CNR for 40 years until his retirement. Archie was best known for his sense of humour and would not hesitate to stop to chat and tell one of his many jokes. With a story to tell and a twinkle in his eye he would keep a straight face to see his listeners reaction. He loved his cottage at Madge Lake (which he built for his family) and spent many happy hours puttering or visiting family and friends. For the last two years he has lived at the Rosewood Supportive Care Home and became a familiar figure riding his "scooter" around the neighbourhood. Thank you to those who helped in his care over the last two years. Dr. Wayne Poon and the staff at the Abbott Clinic (who will chide you now about those 13 steps?) VON services especially Carl Morden; staff at the Rosewood you all spoiled him and he loved every minute of it! Special thanks to Sherri McKinnell for taking extra good care of him. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Archies memory to X11 Manitoba Dragoon/26th Field Regiment RCA Museum Museum 1116 Victoria Ave., Brandon, MB R7A 1B2 or Manitoba Hospice and Palliative Care, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Archies life will be celebrated on Thursday, May 31 at 3:00 p.m. in Deer Lodge United Church, 2093 Portage Ave. at Belvidere. Ubique Honor et Equis - Everywhere Honor and Equality
