JOAN McBAIN (CARSON) Joan passed away suddenly in Calgary on December 1, 2000. A celebration of her life will be held 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., June 9, 2001 at the home of Michael and Shannon Carson near Stonewall. Born Joan Cleveland Dummert in Winnipeg, daughter of Ida and George Dummert, January 1932, she attended Kelvin High School and Brandon Collegiate. During her early years, Joan developed great figure skating ability, and in 1960 joined Ice Capades. This touring ice show took her to London, England, as well as many cities in the U.S. and Canada. In 1952, Joan settled with her widowed mother in Winnipeg and joined Great West Life. The following year she married Arthur Carson and, a year later, the first of her four children arrived. In 1970 the family moved to Montreal, returning to Winnipeg two years later, and then to Calgary in 1978. Joan was very energetic and had a great zest for life. She was an active member of the Junior League, the overseas child support plan and other endeavours. She loved the summer cottage at Arnes, MB and spent her summers there while the children were young. She enjoyed renovating and decorating the several residences in which she lived. In 1974 she opened a bath boutique in Winnipeg (The Elegant John) with her lifelong friend, Hazel Quinton and, on moving to Calgary, opened one there, selling it a few years later when her interest in travelling necessitated changes. Joan loved her family and spent a great deal of time with her children and, later, with grand-children. She made lasting friendships everywhere she lived. In 1995, Joan married Justice Ross McBain in Calgary. She and Ross had several happy and busy years prior to her sudden death. Joan is survived by her children, Pamela in Los Angeles, Michael (Shannon) in Winnipeg, David in Calgary, and Paul (Sherry) in Kelowna (all Carson), and by grandchildren, Adam, Jennifer, Matthew and Lauren, and, of course, by her loving husband Ross. Joans ashes will be spread on Lake Winnipeg, in front of the cottage where she spent so much time. All of Joans friends are invited to a celebration of her life, to be held at the following location: 73075 Sturgeon Rd. (travel 11 km north of the Perimeter on Hwy. #7 to Stony Mountain, then left on PR #321 west two miles, then right on Sturgeon Road - follow to the fifth home. Phone 344-5690).

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • The Carson's played a special part of my life while I was dating their daughter Pam. As life moves on and relationships fade I had the occasion to be in Calgary on business and gave them a call and as always Joan welcomed me as if it had been just yesterday that we had seen each other. There are times when I think back with great fondness for the whole family. Joan is missed I am sure and I only wish that I could have been at her celebration of life. I will say a prayer. - Posted by: Hugh Swan (FRiend) on: Apr 28, 2017
