MIKE SUMKA Peacefully on May 31, 2001, with his family at his side, Mike passed away after a short struggle with cancer. Mike was predeceased by his parents, John and Pauline; his sisters, Ann, Mary, Kay; and two brothers and two sisters who died in infancy (Bill, George, Nellie and Pearl). He will be missed by his wife of 59 years, Elsie; his children, Marion (Wally) Liebenau, Ron (Helen) Sumka, Jim Sumka, Barb (Chris) Magnusson, Carol (Daniel) Chaszewski, Jean (Wayne) Johnson; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Dad was born in Hamrlik, MB on March 17, 1917. On November 7, 1941 he married Elsie Walashek. Dad spent all his life farming, although he had a few side jobs such as mining at Red Lake, ON and cutting pulp and cord wood at Pine Falls. He also contributed to the general community. He was a trustee for the Leeland School and also served as a councillor on the LGD of Fisher for nine years. Prayers will be held on Monday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Ukrainian Catholic Church on Ardal Street in Arborg with Rev. Fr. Mark Gnutel presiding. Interment to follow at the Hamrlik Cemetery. Pallbearers will be six of his grandsons, Harold Liebenau, Kevin Sumka, Darrell Sumka, Kyle Magnusson, Arthur Chaszewski and Steven Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are his remaining grandchildren. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff and doctors at the Arborg Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, friends can make a donation in memory of Mike to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
