LILLIAN ELIZABETH BARRY Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away peacefully, on Friday, June 1 at Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 94 years. Born in New York City, July 14, 1906, the only child of Dr. Joseph Nicholin and Mrs. Barbara (Cicak) Nicholin (later Mrs. Robert Bradley), Lillian Barry spent her early years in New York, Chicago and Winnipeg, graduating from St. Johns Technical High School in Winnipeg, one of the most ethnically diverse schools of its time, in 1925, and from Manitoba Normal School in 1927. She taught at schools in Lewis, Buchan, Sundown, where she met her husband John, and Tyndall, and, after her marriage in 1937, at schools in Winnipeg, Geraldton (Ontario) and East Kildonan. A resident of East Kildonan for more than 40 years, Mrs. Barry taught for many of these years at Angus McKay School, forming close friendships with many students and their families. The education of younger children was a lifelong interest, as were vocal and instrumental music, a wide range of creative crafts, and the cultures and people of many parts of the world. Her piano was an ever-present joy and expression of her skills, and she sang with a splendid dramatic voice. She travelled widely with friends and on her own, particularly in Europe and Asia, and enjoyed spending time with her son and grandchildren in places as far-flung as Hong Kong, Ottawa, London (England), New Delhi, Manila and Paris. In more recent years she has lived quietly at Oakview Place in Winnipeg. Predeceased by her beloved husband, John, in 1981, Mrs. Barry is survived by her son, Allan Joseph, and his recent wife Anna, and granddaughters, Barbara Laura Elizabeth (Mrs. Marc Babinski) and Katherine Nada Claire, all of Ottawa, a granddaughter, Julia Danica, in London, England, as well as an adopted grandson, Tobitbulkload, also of London, and great-grandchildren Tristan and Stephanie. She loved her family deeply, and she will be remembered by them with warmth, love and affection. Mrs. Barry was also deeply fond of and found great support from her nieces and their families, and she will be remembered warmly by them, by other members of her husbands family, and by friends from over the years and their families. Prayers will be said on Thursday, June 7 at 8:00 p.m., in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel at 232 Kennedy St. Funeral service will be held Friday, June 8 at 11:00 a.m., also in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel on Kennedy Street, with Rev. James Hatherly of John Black Memorial United Church officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 232 Kennedy Street 949-4878
