She will be greatly missed by her husband, Charles, and fondly remembered for her love and devotion to him, his best friend. She was predeceased by her father Bob Herring of Norwich, England; her mother Jennie of Edinburgh, Scotland; and her brother Jack of Brockville, Ont. She is survived by her husband Charles; her sister Janet Bider; sisters-in-law, Vera Herring of Brockville, Ont. and Doreen Lacey (Charles) of Surrey, BC; their families, and cousin Hilda Hill (Wally). Phyllis worked for Marshall Wells in the head office for many years and was very versatile, able to take on any challenge offered her. Here she made many life-long friends. She was active in the church all her life. Music was important to her and she was a choir member for many years. She was both secretary and treasurer for several groups (U.C.W. Christian Education and the Sunday School) and a member of the Church Council. She was a teacher in the Sunday School and C.G.I.T. leader in Atlantic Avenue Church for many years. Phyllis was secretary for the MB Laity Council Conference Committee, attending many conferences at Minaki and later Gull Harbour Conference Centre. As a member of the MB Chapter, Cdn. Hard of Hearing Assoc. (CHHA), she received both National and Provincial Awards for her competence as both secretary and treasurer to the Chapter. She attended many of their National Conferences held across Canada. Always looking for new challenges, she learned to operate a computer competently, and used this skill to email friends and business associates, and provide reports, minutes, and agendas for the various organizations to which she belonged. She took a home study course to learn to play the piano, which she enjoyed. Phyllis took her responsibilities seriously and made sure she met her obligations. She cared for people and was loyal and devoted to her family and friends and a strong advocate for justice and fairness. Volunteering and helping others was second nature to her. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses involved with her care at St. Boniface Hospital, for their compassion and kindness to her during her hospitalization. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Phyllis to CHHA: Manitoba Chapter, 825 Sherbrook Street, R3A 1M5, or to a charity of your choice. The Rev. Brent Denham will lead a service of celebration of her life at Gordon-King Memorial United Church, 127 Cobourg Avenue, Thursday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will be held one half hour prior to the service time.
