GAN YUEN LEE It is with sorrow that the family of Gan Yuen Lee announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather on June 4, 2001 at Riverview Health Centre. Left to mourn his memory is his wife of 53 years Shoon Jee; his brother Hung Yuen Lee; his daughters, Lucia Au, Mary Lee; his sons, Terry (Susie), James (Chauntel) granddaughters, Zarene, Elaine, Adelyn, Chanel Au; grandsons, Ryan, Teagan Lee; and many nieces and nephews. Gan was born in Toishan, Kwangtung, China on September 28, 1929, the second son of Chow Bo Chan and Hoo Lee. Gans dedication to both his family and work brought him to Canada in 1953 to help his father run the family restaurant, Shanghai. His legendary work as head chef established Shanghai and its cuisine in Winnipegs Chinatown. His hard work and creativity was not limited to the restaurant, as he was an active member in the Chinese Community. Gan participated in the Chinese Dramatic Society where he displayed his talents in ballroom dancing and banjo playing. Gan also worked modestly as caterer of the Chinese Pavilion during the early years of the Folklorama Festival. He will always be remembered as a loving provider and a man of great character. Viewing will be held 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 11, at Kerrs Funeral Chapel, 120 Adelaide St. Funeral service will be held also at the chapel, 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 12. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Lee, Poi Lee, King Lee, Stanley Leong, Keith Au and Danny Au. The family would like to thank nurses Christina, Norma and Tanya on A4 of H.S.C. as well as Chris, Barbara, Sheila and the nurses aid staff on 3E of Riverview for their excellent care.
