Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH SPLETZER BERGEN 1921 - 2001 After a courageous battle with cancer, Ruth Spletzer Bergen passed away peacefully at her home on June 6, 2001. Ruth was predeceased by her father Johann Spletzer (1940) mother Julianne Buss (1992) sisters, Frieda (1934) and Else (1992) and brothers, Rudolf (1934), Ewald (1988) and Artur (2000). She is survived by husband Martin; daughter Miriam; brothers, Erwin (Martha), Rubin (Christel) and Reinhard (Lydia) and sister Alma Rode (Erich) as well as many nieces and nephews. Ruth Spletzer was born in Klein Kuple, Volhynia (Poland) on April 3, 1921. After the death of her father, she helped her mother run the family farm and look after the younger children. The family was forced to flee from their home and were living in Germany at the end of the war. Ruth and sister Alma were the first of the family to arrive in Winnipeg in 1948. Erwin followed in 1949. The three of them worked hard to bring Oma, Else, Rubin and Reinhard to Canada in 1953. Ewald and Artur remained in East Germany with their families. Ruth met Martin in 1954, and they married the following year. Daughter Miriam was born in 1956. Ruth was a dedicated wife and mother. She took great pride in keeping a clean house and anyone who peeked into her linen closet was awed. She loved having family gatherings, especially at Christmas. Despite her illness, she still managed her home with little help until early this year. Special thanks to Dr. Crow, Dr. Harris, the staff at Concordia Hospital Oncology, Concordia 3 West, the staff from Drake Medox, and Anne Ediger. All of you helped Mom through a very difficult time. Private family viewing will be held on Monday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy. with Rev. G. Friesen officiating. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. at McDermot Avenue Baptist Church, 821 McDermot Ave. with Pastor W. Dietrich officiating. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruths memory to Concordia Hospital Foundation, 1095 Concordia, Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S8. Arrangements entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
