JOHN B. WOOD January 26, 1938 - June 6, 2001 Surrounded by his immediate family, relatives and Council members, John peacefully passed away at the Health Sciences Centre. John was a good provider for his family throughout the years of his life. As a young man he was a trapper and a fisherman, also he was a lodge guide for a number of years. Later on he worked as a Hudsons Bay manager and a clerk. He became involved with the school and began transporting students by ski-doo and boat for a number of years. He was a bus driver for five years and eventually worked as a board member for two years at Garden Hill Education Authority. John was a Garden Hill First Nation Vice Chief, 23 years as Councillor and an elder. He has encouraged and supported many people throughout his life. He has touched them with his humour and laughter and especially loved the youth and had advised many. He will be remembered by numerous organizations, Springhill Lumber, Child & Family Services, PENCO, P.M. Associates, Arnason, Island Lake Tribal Council and other surrounding First Nations. John is survived by his wife Agnes and was predeceased by his parents, Elijah Wood and Catherine Wood. He will be lovingly remembered by his brothers, Willie Wood (Kaneen), Cornelius Monias (Rubina) and sister Margaret Monias. He is also survived by his loving daughters, Sharon (David) Kakegamic, Leona (Jarvis) Kakegamic, Janice (Ralph) Barkman; and sons, Elvis (Lorna) Glen, Steve (Cindy), Ambrose (Marsha). Also his brothers-in-law, Tommy (Harriet) Harper, Zack Harper (Lillian), Elias (Eliza) Harper; and sisters-in-law, Rebecca (Samson) Harper, Red Sucker Lake, and Colleen (Portimus) Anishabe. He will be greatly missed by his 28 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and also numerous friends and extended relatives. The family would like to thank the staff of Garden Hill nursing station, the doctors and nurses during his short stay at the Health Sciences Centre, The Garden Hill First Nation Chief and Council will sadly miss their co-worker, political advisor, friend and encourager. Memorial service will be held at the Aboriginal Funeral Home on Thursday, June 7 at 6:00 p.m. Wake services will be held at his residence June 8 and 9. Funeral services will be held on June 10, 1:00 p.m. at Garden Hill United Church. Jacob Keno will be officiating. Active pallbearers will be Glen, Ambrose, Steve, Elvis, Jarvis, Ralph and David.
