ALWYN RAY FAHRNER On Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Tuxedo Villa Extendicare, Alwyn Ray Fahrner passed away at the age of 94 years. Alwyn was born on May 5, 1907, in the Mayfeld district, near Gladstone. He attended Gillespie School and worked on the family farm prior to moving to Winnipeg. First employed in Eatons Mail Order, he joined Trans Canada Airlines, retiring from Air Canada in 1972 after 31 years. He married Roberta MacLennan of Gladstone in 1937, celebrating nearly 64 years of marriage. Living mainly in Charleswood, they raised their family and were involved residents. Alwyn was a member of the Charleswood Masonic Lodge, a longtime member of the Charleswood United Church, and served on the Charleswood Municipal Council from 1955 to 1958. Well known in curling circles, Al began curling in 1928 and was an active member of the Charleswood Club from 1948 until 1992. He served as Club President in 1958 - 1959, was a life member of the Club, and a life member of the Manitoba Curling Association. The highlight of his curling years came when he skipped his Charleswood Rink, to represent Manitoba in the Canadian Seniors Championships in 1969. Al is survived by his wife Roberta of Tuxedo Villa, and lovingly remembered by son Don (Claudia) of Heidelburg, Germany; daughter Gail (Joe) of Rohnert Park, CA; five grand-children; cousins and many nieces and nephews, including special niece Frances Fahner. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jean Fahner of Gladstone and Vic Crawley of The Pas. He was predeceased by sisters, Milda, Vera, and Eva; and brother Fred. The family extends special thanks and appreciation to the dedicated staff of Tuxedo Villa and Home Care, for the loving care and respectful understanding to both our parents and family. Donations in memory of Alwyn may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment and reception will follow.
