PAUL NISBET DuVAL On June 7, 2001, surrounded by family and with his wife Barbara at his side, Paul Nisbet DuVal passed away. He was born at home at 312 Oak St. in Winnipeg on May 12th, 1928. His early schooling was at Queenston, and Robert H. Smith Schools. He then attended Kelvin High School where he graduated in 1945, having been awarded the Governor Generals Medal. He studied commerce at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1949. While there, he was sports editor of the Manitoban, and manager of the Bisons basketball team. In 1951 he completed a Master of Business Administration degree at the Harvard Business School. Paul married Barbara Jean Hall on September 5, 1950. In 1951 they moved to Windsor, ON where Paul worked for the Ford Motor Company. In 1953, Paul and Barbara returned to Winnipeg where Paul managed the Acme Sash and Door Co., and the St. Regis Hotel. Later in his career he was a lecturer with the University of Manitoba Faculty of Management. He served as president of the Winnipeg Builders Exchange, Manitoba vice-president of the Canadian Construction Association, Vice-president of the Architectural Woodwork Institute, and was a board member of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and the Manitoba Hotel Association. Paul was an active member of Knox United Church. In addition to a variety of congregational roles, he was a delegate to Winnipeg Presbytery, and the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. He served as Conference Treasurer for several years, and was president in 1982-1983. Paul was a Commissioner to the National General Council, and a member of the National Division of Finance. Paul had a very special attachment to the cottage at Farlane, spending some of the happiest times of his childhood and adult life there. He was never more content than when he was "at the lake" with members of his family. He was predeceased by his father, the Honourable Paul Guyot DuVal (Court of Queens Bench), and his mother Isobel DuVal (nee Cross). Along with his wife Barbara, he is survived by his six children, Paul of Red Deer, AB, Doug (Monique) of Edmonton, Gordon of Toronto, James of Winnipeg, Bruce (Carolyn) of Saskatoon, and Margot (Marc) Bissonnette of Winnipeg. They are the grandparents of Mihaela, Zoe, and Adriana DuVal, Marc, Stephan, Justin, and Michele DuVal, Michael and Claire DuVal; and Denis and Sophie Bissonnette. Last summer, Paul and Barbara celebrated 50 unforgettable years together at an anniversary party surrounded by all of their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Fred (Ethel) of Winnipeg; his sister Lorna (Conrad) Stone of Roanoke, Virginia; sister-in-law Margaret Hall McKay of Winnipeg, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of the life of Paul N. DuVal will be held at Knox United Church Winnipeg at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 12. Friends may call at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Monday June 11 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The family would like to thank Dr. Roberts and the caring nursing staff of the Health Sciences Centre MICU. In lieu of flowers, and in recognition that Paul was a keen proponent of the wise and generous stewardship of material possessions, friends are encouraged to remember him with a memorial contribution to: The DuVal Foundation of Knox Church, the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada, The Jessie Saulteaux Resource Centre, or any cause or organization of the donors choice. He was an extraordinary husband, father, and friend. We will miss him very much. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
