PEARL MARTIN It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Pearl Martin, a longtime resident of Libau, MB from 1938 to 1986. She resided at the Middlechurch Nursing Home from April 14, 1992 to June 12, 2001. Pearl was born in Western Ukraine on October 20, 1910. She immigrated to Canada in 1929 and lived with her sister Mary Namaka and family in Winnipegosis. Pearl married Dymetro Martin in June of 1938 and moved to Libau. Pearl and Dymetro took up farming and Pearl was a very busy person taking care of a large garden, raising chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, pigs and cows. She was famous for her perogies. She also was the caretaker of the local school. Pearl was in her 50s when she decided to go to school to improve her English, reading and writing skills. Pearl was a lifelong member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and her greatest gift was generosity. Pearl was predeceased by her husband Dymetro in 1973; son Samuel in 1972; sister Mary Namaka in 1977; and her youngest son Raymond in 1978. Pearl leaves to mourn her passing, her only daughter Helen Bischoff and husband Harold; her son Bill Martin-Viscount of Fort Worth, TX; her two grandchildren, Randy Bischoff and Karen Smith and husband Nicholas; and her two great-grandchildren, great-grandson Jason Smith born on her 70th birthday and her great-granddaughter Alonna Smith. She also leaves her three nephews, Marvin and Joan Namaka, Paul and Joyce Namaka, and Walter and Sonia Namaka. The family wishes to thank Anne Holack for being such a faithful visitor and support to Pearl. Special thanks to you Bozena Foks who did much to ensure Pearls evenings were happier and more comfortable. Also thank you to all who tried to make Pearls last few days as comfortable as possible. A graveside funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 19 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Johns Ukrainian Catholic Churchyard at Poplar Park, with Deacon Peter Chorney officiating. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
