ALAN FINLAY MUNROE Suddenly and peacefully, on June 11, 2001 at the Riverview Health Centre, Alan Munroe passed away at the age of 75 years with his loving family at his side. Alan was predeceased by his parents, George Ross and Fanny Munroe; brother James; and sister Richenda. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Lorraine; four sons, Fred (Monica), Ken (Suzanne), Don (Marlene), Richard (Janice) eight grandchildren, Donny, Kitina, James, Katherine, David, Andrew, Garrett, and Taylor; brother Harold (Rae) as well as many relatives and friends. Alan Finlay Munroe was born on April 5, 1926 in Lauder, MB. In 1941 he became a telegraph messenger with CN Telegraphs. In 1942 he met a beautiful young lady who happened to be the first female telegraph messenger in Canada. Her name was Lorraine Lockyer, who on February 28, 1947 became his wife. Alan joined the Royal Canadian Navy in April 1944 at the age of 17 and a half. In February of 1946, he received an honourable discharge. Soon after leaving the Navy, Alan became an active member of the Liberal Party. He was very involved in civic politics, as well as provincial and federal elections. More recently he took a very active and vibrant role in the revitalization of the Manitoba Liberal Party. The successes and goals achieved by those that he assisted were meaningful achievements and true highlights in his personal life. He often spoke warmly and respectfully of all those who worked in public life. On November 3, 1976, Alan was honoured when he was appointed by the Winnipeg Police Department as a Police Commissioner. He was also a member of the executive and honorary president of the St. Andrews Society. He was appointed as a life member for the Liberal Party of Manitoba and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 04-043. On November 4, 1983, Alan retired from CN Telecommunications where he had been promoted to the position of equipment supervisor. In the spring of 1996, Alan accepted a position as a member of the Board of Referees for the Pension Appeal Board, Department of Veteran Affairs. He served in this position for a period of two terms, retiring in April of 2001. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alans memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6. Funeral service celebrating Alans life will be held Thursday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the Immanuel Pentecostal Church, 955 Wilkes Ave., with Rev. Erhard Buss officiating.
