ERNEST SHAPIRO On Thursday, June 14, 2001, at age 76. Survived by his wife Evelyn; sons, Zave and Daniel (Susan) granddaughter Sarah; and brothers, Benjamin, Ted, Henry, and Peter. Ernest was born in Montreal in 1924, and left school at 14 to help support his family, but completed high school at night, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University) at age 22. After a career in advertising, he earned his Masters degree in Education at Boston University in 1965, and began the career which brought him to Winnipeg in 1968, as an administrator and professor at the University of Manitoba, completing his Ph.D. in Education at St. Louis University soon after. Upon retiring in 1987, he started an antique book business, for the next 10 years perhaps the most rewarding of his careers. A lover of the arts, Ernest was a strong supporter of several of Winnipegs arts institutions, ranging from music and theatre to the visual arts. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 17 at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, with burial at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery.
