Tofida Abas, better known to family and friends as Freda, was born April 3, 1914, in Crookston, MN. She was the second child in a family of eight. The family homesteaded in Hodgson, MB, where Freda spent her childhood. In 1941, she married Albert Austin and moved to Welby, SK. Together they ran the general store/post office and raised their family. Freda continued to run their store after Albert died in 1959, until she moved to Winnipeg in 1970. Even then she would not be idle and soon found employment at Scot Bathgate (Nutty Club) until she retired in 1986. In 1999, as her health deteriorated, she moved to Luseland, SK to be close to her daughter Alberta. Mom was a real-life role model and best friend. She will be truly missed by all who knew her, rest in your most deserving peace. A memorial service was held in Luseland on May 28, with her good friend Doreen Waltz presiding.
