JAMES (JERRY) BEST Peacefully on June 18, 2001 at Grace Hospital, Jerry passed away. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 32 years and best friend, Marilyn; his beloved daughter Valerie and her husband Dean Kachur; sisters, Eileen McEwen, Kathleen (John) Barnes; brothers, Lyndy (Zoe) Best, John (Jean) his mother-in-law, Edith Davis; and sisters-in-law, Valerie Grenier, Bonnie (Ted) Irvine and their families. Jerry was proud of his Irish Heritage. He enjoyed travelling with Marilyn from coast to coast, Hawaii and many memorable years at Sandy Hook. He made many lasting friendships during his 47 and one-half years at Eatons. An inaugural member of the Eaton Retirement Club, he received a life membership having served 12 years on the Board of Governors. He was proud to have served his country in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Jerry was a long time member of St. James Legion No. 4. He was a great sportsman, a Bomber season ticket holder for 40 years. Fishing, hunting, hockey, curling and golfing were all a great part of his life. A member of Assiniboine Golf Club starting as a junior and continued in his senior years, he was awarded an honorary life membership. At Jerrys request, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. We encourage family and friends to take a few moments to celebrate Jerrys life through personal reflections and happy memories you shared with him. A reception for Jerrys friends will be held at the St. James Legion Branch No. 4, 1755 Portage Ave. from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Friday, June 22. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Jerrys memory may be made to Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7 or to a charity of ones choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Wayne Van Horne, Dr. Pat Harris, wonderful nurses and staff at The Grace (3N) for their care and compassion. In tears we saw you sinking We watched you fade away, You suffered much in silence You fought so hard to stay. You faced your task with courage Your spirit did not bend, But still you kept on fighting Until the very end. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you And whispered "Come with Me." So when we saw you sleeping So peaceful free from pain, We could not wish you back To suffer that again. Our family chain is broken And nothing seems the same, As God calls us one by one Our chain will link again. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
