JOYCE BOWDEN (nee HELLIN) Born July 20 1924 in Bristol, England, died at her home in Winnipeg on Tuesday, June 21, 2001. Sadly missed by her husband, Drummond; son, Richard (Melinda Upshur) of Toronto, ON; daughter, Jane (Douglas Vipond) of Fredericton, NB; and grandsons Nicholas and Sam Vipond; Alexander and Dylan Bowden. >From 1941 to 1951, Joyce worked as a programme assistant at the B.B.C. in Bristol and London. In 1948 she married Drummond Bowden; their daughter Jane, was born in 1951 and a year later, the family left for Toronto - ostensibly for two years. However, they stayed - a canoe trip in Algonquin Park and a visit to the inaugural season of the Stratford Festival having convinced Joyce that life in Canada might be all right. In 1956, the family, now including two year old Richard, moved to Saint Louis, MO. The eight Missouri years were particularly happy; Joyce enthusiastically embraced volunteer activities and, every summer the family escaped to the mountains of Montana for a month of camping and hiking. In 1964, on moving to Winnipeg, Joyce decided to pursue her childhood dream to become an artist. She studies painting and printmaking at Nikola Bjelajacs Forum Art Institute in Winnipeg. In 1975 she opened her own studio, focussing upon woodcuts, monoprints and collographs. More recently, she turned to pastel painting and her very last exhibition - Pastels by Joyce Bowden at Winnipegs Site Gallery - opened just three months before her death. She will be dearly missed by her family and by a network of friends and artists in Canada, the USA, Japan and Britain. Friends are invited to celebrate the life of Joyce Bowden in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27. The family thanks Dr. Gwen Kalansky, the staff at the Riverview Health Centre and Home-Care nurses Chris and Louise for their help in caring for Joyce. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
