CATHERINE MARY RICHERT (nee GOODMAN) It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my mother Catherine Mary Richert (nee Goodman), widow of Gordon Richert, age 76, of Selkirk, MB. Catherine is survived by her only daughter Laurel; sister Sallie Bird and husband Gordon Bird of Selkirk. She is also survived by two half-sisters, Lil McLennan of Winnipeg, and Ellen Campbell of Arnprior, ON; sisters-in-law, Gwen and Mary Goodman and Helen Richert; one brother-in-law Howard and wife Min Richert of Chilliwack, BC; and also numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her brothers, Bob and Jim Goodman; mother Lillie Goodman (nee Smith) father Richard Goodman; and half-sister Margaret Griffith. Mom lived all her life in Selkirk and started her nursing career at St. Peters Dynevor TB Hospital and it was there that she met my father Gordon. Mom was also very proud of her Native heritage. Gordon and Catherine married on August 11, 1950 and in May of 1951, their only daughter Laurel was born. Mother and father were happily married for 42 years upon fathers death in December of 1992. Mom and dad both became psychiatric nurses working at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre and moms nursing career spanned over 38 years. Mom loved her patients and even after retirement she sent birthday cards and would occasionally visit. Mom enjoyed many things in life besides her husband and daughter, and some of her favourite past times were crocheting, knitting and gardening. She especially enjoyed baking cookies, decorating cookies and giving them away. She loved children and lately enjoyed the children on the street, Brett, Franesca, Hunter and baby Easton. She loved birds and animals and was thrilled last summer when a bluebird and a falcon appeared in her yard. She also had a passion for the arts, music (especially opera), and she especially loved the Royal Family. She enjoyed mystery movies on T.V., the Antiques Road Show, Coronation Street, and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Another one of mothers past times was reading any articles on the Titantic. She also enjoyed doing the daily crossword puzzle in the Winnipeg Free Press. Mom loved her family as well and especially enjoyed Cheryl, Lisa and Jimmy, Pam and Tara, and lately Cameron and Meghan. In the past, mom enjoyed summers when dads sister Clarice and husband Don would bring their four girls, Carol, Marilyn, Sherri and Judy for holidays. Mother also had many extended families and I would like to mention them because I know they were very special to both my mother and father. The families are as follows: Donna and Jim Mostowy; Lisa and Jim; Chrissie and Wally Van Beveren and daughters, Candace and Becky; Ricky and Brenda Lloyd and sons, Ian and Connor; Diane and Ron Novakowski and daughters, Ebony and Britt; and most recently, Tom and Wendy Serger and daughter Sabrina. Prayers will be Friday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. at Gilbarts Funeral Home, Eveline Street, Selkirk. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held before the memorial service. Memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 30 at Christ Church, McLean Avenue, Selkirk, with the Rev. Hugh Laidlaw officiating. Moms ashes will be carried by Wally Van Beveren and honorary pallbearers are Mary Cartlidge, Nonie Hook, Gail Kotowich, Olive Lillie, Doreen Oliver, and Nick Zachidniak. In lieu of cards, flowers, and wreaths, donations can be made to the following places: Oncology Clinic, Concordia Hospital, 1095 Concordia Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S8 or Selkirk General Hospital, Box 5000, 100 Easton Dr., Selkirk, MB R1A 2M2 or to a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
