Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGIOVANNI (JOHN) SCALENA John Scalena was born November 24, 1921 in Winnipeg and died peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre on June 24, 2001. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Sophia in 1972; his four brothers, Tony, Codorna, Luigi and Alex; and is survived by his three sisters, Rose Moore, Maria Backman (Bill) and Lorraine Baird; his special friend Sylvia; plus many nieces and nephews. Prior to his retirement in 1982, John worked at the CPR - Weston Shops as a machinist for more than 40 years and spent four years in the army overseas during the Second World War. His interests included travel, gardening and he was active in horse racing. John was known for his generosity, keen sense of humour, an interest in world affairs and his genuine interest in family and friends. In keeping with his wishes, John has been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 29 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with Msgr. Moore officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the to the charity of your choice.
