DOROTHY MAE TORFASON (nee WEST) 1930 - 2001 The family of Dorothy Torfason announces her peaceful passing at Betel Home in Gimli, MB on Monday, June 25, 2001. Dorothy left this life surrounded with the love of her husband, children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mae West, her grandson Bjorn, and recently her dear brother Dr. Bennet West. Dorothy was born on March 5, 1930 in Regina, SK. Growing up she attended private school and enjoyed many sports and her many friends. One of her fond memories was living at Harbell on the River Road and growing gladiolas with her father. Dorothy married Victor on September 21, 1959. Together they raised five children in Transcona, later moving to her dream home in Winnipeg Beach. If there was a story in the Interlake to be covered, Dorothy was there as a reporter for the Interlake Spectator. In 1988, she received a Certificate of Merit from the Government of Canada for her contributions to her community. She was especially interested in covering figure skating where she supported her daughter Dori and also all of the boys hockey games. You never saw Mom without her camera. It was always a joke how long we had to pose for a picture, we think that maybe she just wanted us to sit still. One of Dorothys greatest loves were her dogs, Kizer, Lady, Finnigan and Bono to name a few. Mom, we will always remember your laughter, late night scrabble games, Torfys dinners, and Santa socks. We appreciate the values you instilled in us and all your love. Thanks for the gift of memories, we will pass them on. Left to cherish those memories are her husband of 42 years, Victor; daughter Veanne Hudson (Jeff), Karlene, Kristin and Kodi; son John (Gail), Cole and Clint; son Jamie (Louise), Amanda, Eric; son Todd (Debbie), Aislynn, Christian; daughter Dori-Mae Forsyth (Bob), Kalee, Leif; the West children; and her dearest friend and godmother to her children Marie Waver. The family would like to thank the staff at Betel Home in Gimli for their care and compassion they have given Mom over the past years. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, at the Winnipeg Beach United Church, 30 Murray Ave., with Rev. Lynn Stevens officiating. Honorary pallbearers, friends, Marie Waver, Josie Palamar, Sylvia Benson, Judy Kilnea, Bunny Groundwater, Helen Semchyshyn, Lorraine MacVicar, niece Cathy Trowsdale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Betel Home, Box 10, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
