JOAN BARKER Peacefully resting after a long and courageous battle with ALS, Joan Barker passed away on June 27, 2001, at the age of 68. Joan was predeceased by her brother Richard and her father John. Her memory will be forever cherished by her loving husband of 46 years Ron; her three sons, Geoffrey, Grant (Isabel), and Graeme; her seven grandchildren; her mother Verna McKeag; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and many close friends. Joan was retired from Lions Club of Winnipeg Housing Centres where she was Director of Capital Fund Development and Director of Volunteer Services from 1981 to her retirement in 1998. A member of the St. Boniface School Board, she was a trustee from 1978 to 1992, where she was chairman of the board from 1986 to 1992. She sat on numerous boards such as M.A.O., M.A.S.T, M.A.V.A., and others. She was nominated for the YWCA Woman of the Year Award in 1980 and 1985. Joan gave extensively of herself and her time and efforts were given to many organizations on a volunteer basis. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and a reception will follow at Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to ALS Society of Manitoba, c/o Deer Lodge Centre, 2190 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0L3. Joan would like to thank the ALS Team at Deer Lodge Centre, Home Care and especially St. Boniface Palliative Care, in my view these are remarkable people.
