Abe was predeceased by his parents, Abram and Justina Barg; his brother Peter and a sister in infancy. Abe was born March 23, 1917 in the village of Ellesabettal in Southern Russia. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1926 at the age of nine years. The family settled and farmed in the Glenlea district of Manitoba. He and his brother took over the family farm at the time of his parents retirement. Abe married Margaret Lawton in October 1949. They resided in the St. James area all their married life. Abe worked in a variety of jobs in the city until he obtained steady employment as a machine operator with the St. James Water Department which later joined the City of Winnipeg. He always maintained that the years he worked in this capacity were the happiest years of his life. His family meant everything to him and he was happy to be able to support them and earn a good living. Abe was a sensitive, caring and honest person and was frequently referred to as "Honest Abe" by his friends. He and Margaret enjoyed their cottage at Netley Creek, camping trips with their boys, their trips overseas, and to various locations in Canada and U.S.A. He was very proud of his family and delighted in his grandchildren. The family wish to thank Doctors and staff at Grace Hospital and Heritage Lodge for their compassion and care of Abe.
