Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE ADNE STUCKEY Peacefully in his 80th year, Lawrence Adne Stuckey passed away June 13, 2001 at Hillcrest Place, after a short illness. He was predeceased by his wife Mavis in December of 1999. Lawrence is survived by his sister Muriel Moore of Port Dover, ON; his niece Cheryl Parker of Vancouver, BC, and his cousin Doug (Doreen) Bottley of Brandon. Lawrence was born in Brandon in 1921 to Adne and Catherine Stuckey, and was the grandson of a Brandon pioneer family, the Gilmours. He went to Fleming, Earl Oxford, and Brandon Collegiate Institute. He started with the CPR in May of 1941 as a wiper / fireman, and in October of 1942 he joined the R.C.A.F. He served overseas as a Navigator / Bomb Aimer and was promoted to Flight Sergeant. He returned to the CPR in September of 1945 and was promoted to fireman / engineer in 1950. In January of 1958 he left the CPR to purchase Clark-Smith Photo Studio on 10th Street in Brandon. Due to illness, Lawrence worked at home from 1971 to the mid-80s when he and Mavis retired. During his lifetime Lawrence enjoyed many interests and was active in many local, provincial, and national organizations. He was a member of the Brandon Stamp Club, the Allied Arts Council, Brandon Horticultural Society, Brandon Model Railroad Club, the Brandon Historical Society, and the Fort Whyte Centre. His many interests included letters to the editor; local, provincial, and federal politics; coffee shop conversations with many Brandonites; and a continuing interest in all his many friends and their activities. Lawrence corresponded with hundreds of people around the world, throughout his life, on a wide range of topics and interests including: botany, history, photography, and politics. He was the author of four books and numerous articles on horticulture, railways, and Brandon area history. His many awards include the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt in 1987, honorary and founding memberships in many groups and organizations, and an honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from Brandon University, awarded in 1997. Lawrences lifelong collection of local historical information and photographs have been donated to the Brandon University Archives, where they will serve future generations. His stamp collection has also been donated to Brandon University. His extensive Railway photography collection is now in the hands of several other collectors throughout North America. Cremation has taken place and a burial of ashes with a graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 7 at the family plot in Brandon Cemetery. Everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lawrences memory may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 - 17th St. East, Brandon, MB R7A 6Z2, or to a charity of choice.
