STEFANIA (STEFFIE) LEWICKI (nee Synkarczyn) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Steffie, at the age of 90, on June 29, 2001, at the Betel Home in Gimli, MB. Steffie was born on March 5, 1911, in Pilotkowce, Poland, and in 1929, came to Canada, settling in the Arnes area, with her family. She was the eldest of eight children. She is survived by her brothers, Edward Sinkarson (Anne), Kardy Sinkarson, and sister, Stella Smithers and many nieces and nephews. Walter, her beloved husband of almost 38 years, parents, Antonina and Michael, and brothers, Murray, Louis and Danny predeceased her. Steffie and Walter were married on July 5, 1945, at St. Vladimir and Olga Church in Winnipeg, MB. Walters work with the C.P.R. took them to Terrace Bay and Schreiber, ON. In Schreiber, Steffie was a dedicated homemaker and seamstress. She was a faithful member of the Holy Angels Church and the Catholic Womens League. Through the years, Steffie always kept in contact with her family, travelled by train and visited them in Winnipeg, Arnes, and Gimli, once a year, always bringing with her, blueberries, from her "rocky" Ontario, as she fondly referred to it. After Walters passing, she wanted to be closer to her family and in the fall of 1983, she moved to Gimli, taking with her the happy memories of many friendships from Schreiber. Steffies love of sewing was a life-long hobby, along with crocheting and needlework. She greatly enjoyed gardening, and nature. She was an integral part of the families of her nieces, Delores Michaluk (Tony), and the late Lorraine Zayik (Fred). Memories of "Auntie Steffie" will be cherished by them, Tony Jr. (Samantha), Mark and Kevin Michaluk, Lorrie Kormilo (Chris), Sherry Zayik (Richard; Kathy and Johnny), Freddie Jr. (Tammy; Hailey and Courtney) and Murray Zayik. She was our Lords devout and faithful servant and an inspiration to others. Being a member of the Catholic Womens League (in Schreiber, ON and Gimli) for over 50 years, was a great source of happiness to her. She always looked forward to the meetings, activities (especially peroghy-making) and the fellowship of the ladies. In 1997, Steffie became a resident of the Betel Home. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff of the Gimli Betel Home, not only for their excellent care, thoughtfulness and compassion, but for all the ways they made Steffie feel special and loved, truly making Betel her home. Prayers were said on Sunday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michaels Parish, Gimli, MB with Deacon Ray Sutton officiating. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 2, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michaels Parish with Fr. Jose Cabral officiating. Interment will take place in the Schreiber Cemetery, in Schreiber, ON. Pallbearers will be Tony Michaluk Sr., Fred Zayik Sr., Tony Michaluk Jr., Mark Michaluk, Kevin Michaluk, and Freddie Zayik Jr. Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli in care of arrangements.
