FRED YANKE Peacefully on July 8, 2001 at the Eriksdale Personal Care Home, Fred Yanke, aged 88 years of Ashern, passed away with his beloved wife at his side. Fred was born on February 19, 1913 in Beausejour, MB to Ernestina and August Yanke. His parents came from Volynia, Russia and resided in Beausejour. From there they moved to the New Home area in Ashern. Fred was confirmed at the New Home Church. He worked for .25 cents a day picking stones instead of going to school at the young age of six years. He was fond of cattle and really enjoyed the challenge of breaking horses. Fred married Tillie (Stebner) on September 4, 1937. They farmed in many areas from Eriksdale to Grahamdale. He was a prosperous farmer. Fred loved his family and loved having them around, especially the little grandchildren. His family was very important to him and he often bragged about his wife. In earlier years, he was very close with his brothers and sisters. Fred enjoyed hunting with his brothers and brothers-in-law, and loved to go to picnics. Fred leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Tillie of 63 years; daughters, Marion (Ted) Cook, Dorothy (Bill) Nightingale, Shirley (Don) Russell, Linda (Lorne) Park; and his son Larry (Ruth Ellen) 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Willie (Leona), Charles (Joyce) sisters, Helen, Edith (Paul), Martha, Annie (Leo), Alma, Elsie, Olga (Dick), Esther; sisters-in-law, Mabel, Helen, Alice, Martha, Freda, Marion (Bernard) brothers-in-law, Martin (Bernice), Herbie; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernestina and August Yanke; and his in-laws, Martin and Louise Stebner; his children, Joyce and Marvin in infancy; son-in-law Paul Kernested; granddaughter Arlene Nightingale; brothers, Arthur, August; his sister Tillie; and brothers-in-law, Henry Pagcoe, Charlie Kiesman, Gus Zutz, Herbie Kiesman, Bill Felbel, Dan Rawluk, Art Townsend, Henry Kohanik, Henry Newman, Ferdy Newman, Henry Weins, and Albert Weigelt; sisters-in-law, Olga, Ida, Wanda, Lydia, and Edith. Friends and relatives may pay their respects between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13 at the Arnason Funeral Home in Ashern. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment to follow in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his six grandsons, Dwight Kernested, Delwin Kernested, Brian Nightingale, Warren Nightingale, Kirby Russell, and Jim Park. Everyone in attendance can consider themselves honorary pallbearers for Fred that day. A very special thank you to the Eriksdale Personal Care Home workers for being extremely kind and caring to Fred, also to Dr. Steyn and staff of Eriksdale, and Dr. Piesas of Ashern.
