CASIMIR M. CARTER Peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimers, Casimir M. Carter passed away at the age of 87, on Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Tache Centre where he had been a resident for seven years. Casimir was born June 10, 1914 in Winnipeg where he lived all his life. Cas is survived by his sister Wanda Locke; his sister-in-law Blythe Carter; his nephew Robert Harlander-Locke; his nieces, Patti Locke-Lewkowich, Rosalie Feather, Sandra Fox, and Kathy Smith; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Also survived by his dear friends, Leonard Galpin and Stanley Kelly. "Uncle Cas" was like a father to Patti and Robert. They both cherish the influence he had on their lives. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Katherine Latawiec; brothers, Frank, Ben and Stanley; and sisters, Mary and Jenny. Casimir was employed as a Customs and Excise officer with the federal government for nearly 40 years. He also served with the R.C.A.F. 1939 to 1943. Cas had many interests including music, art, literature, calligraphy, and travel. His greatest passion was dance. He was a founding member of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and danced classical and character roles until 1952. Cas was the dance critic for the Winnipeg Free Press from 1966 to the 1980s, and for Dance Magazine. Cass dream was to write a book about the history of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, but this was not achieved due to his illness. Much of his research was the source of later books on the R.W.B. that have been published. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff at the Tache Centre, for their compassionate, understanding care. Funeral mass to be held at St. Marys Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave., Saturday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Marys Cemetery, Osborne Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3C 4G2. Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 233-4949.
