SYDNEY McKAY BARNETT It is with great sorrow that the family of Sydney McKay Barnett announce his passing on July 14, 2001. Syd was born on March 7, 1924 in Winnipeg. He was the eldest child and only son of Alfred and Ethel Barnett (Moorehouse). He grew up with his younger sisters, Gladys and Bernice in Transcona. On March 19, 1941 he began his career with the Canadian National Railway as a Carman Apprentice. He retired from his supervisors position on November 30, 1982 after 41 years of service. He also enlisted with the R.C.A.F. on March 19, 1943 and served on the base at Trenton, ON until his honourable discharge on October 24, 1945. Syd was married to Stephanie Mihalyk on November 5, 1955. They began their married life in Transcona where their daughters, Linda and Joan were born. In 1964, they moved their family to a new home that they had built in Anola, their current residence. Barbara was born in Anola. Syd was a past member of CN Supervisors Association and a current member of Manitoba Division No. 1 of CN Pensioners. He was a member of the Transcona Royal Canadian Legion No. 7 and the Transcona Masonic Lodge No. 123. He attended the United Church in Anola and volunteered his services to the church. Syds favourite leisure activities were camping, swimming and sun tanning. He enjoyed many summers camping with his daughters, Linda, Joan and Barbara and in later years, with his granddaughter Alexis. His wife Stephanie; daughters, Linda Wachal (Ken), Diane Joan Stroud (Don) and Barbara Barnett-Fontaine (Billy) and two grand-daughters, Alexis and Vanessa; sister Gladys Hebert (George) and family; as well as the family of his sister Bernice Barnett, survive him. He was predeceased by his sister Bernice in 1995 and his niece Tamara Hebert in 1996. A celebration of his life will be held at Green Acres Memorial Chapel on Friday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow on site in the Garden of the Four Apostles. Rev. Jane Wetelainen of the Anola United Church will perform the service. Paul Martin, Chaplain of the Royal Canadian Legion, will assist Rev. Wetelainen. GREEN ACRES FUNERAL CHAPEL 222-3241
