ALICE LAWRENCE Alice Lawrence died peacefully, with her family by her side, on July 18, 2001, at Oakview Place in Winnipeg. Predeceased by her loving husband, Evered, in April of 2000, she is survived by daughters, Leslie Wilson (Don) and Linda Pettit (Rob) grandchildren, Glen (Renee), Keith (Tina) and Heather Wilson and James and Roberta Pettit; and great-grandchildren, Drew, Alexandra and Tyler Wilson. Alice was born in England in 1913 and came to Winnipeg with her parents, Tom and Vera Middlemass, when she was an infant. Alice attended Teachers College ("Normal School") and taught at William Whyte School in Winnipeg and at Little Mountain School in Lilyfield, where she met a local farmer, Evered Lawrence. They were married in 1941. Alice and Evered spent the next 54 years on their farm at Lilyfield. When her daughters were born, she gave up full-time teaching, although she substituted when called upon. She never lost her interest in education, however, and served on the school board for several years. As a 4-H leader, she passed on her skills in sewing, knitting, and public speaking to many young people. For more than 40 years she attended monthly meetings of the Mount Lildon Womens Institute, where she held every office and was an integral part of all activities. Her involvement in W.I. was recognized with a life membership in the Manitoba Womens Institute. The Lawrence home was a very busy one and open to all. Evereds calendar and desk were always full from the farm and from his municipal council responsibilities, insurance business, and gladiola. Alice was his unpaid administrative assistant, who kept everything in order and who welcomed and fed the constant flow of visitors. From her childhood, her teaching days, and the many activities that she and Evered enjoyed, Alice made countless friends and valued each one. She always put others before herself. Her family was central to her life and her love for them was absolute. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her special joy. We know that Mom would want to give special thanks, as do the family, to the caring staff at Oakview Place where she lived since 1996. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21 at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg, with a reception to follow. If you wish, a donation to the Salvation Army, the Association for Community Living, Interlake Branch, Box 1222, Stonewall, or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
