BERNICE EVELYN HAMMOND Peacefully, on Thursday, July 19, 2001 at the Gimli Betel Home, Bernice Evelyn Hammond, aged 74 years, of Arnes, passed away. Bernice leaves to mourn her beloved husband Robert; her son David (Gerry) granddaughters, Diana (Vincent) and Jacqui (Damon) sister Doris Cooper; and brother Edward Hemington. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bernice was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Arthur Hemington. Bernice was born in Winnipeg on November 5, 1926. She spent her youth in Winnipeg, and danced with the Winnipeg Ballet and her love of dance stayed with her throughout her life. She met Bob over 53 years ago and they enjoyed over 51 years in a loving marriage. As a family they started and built Spruce Sands Resort just north of Gimli. Over the last 40 years they made many friends. Bernice always said she should write a book about all the people she had met over the years. Bernice and Bob were also very lucky to be able to spend many winters in Arizona where they made more friends. She was not able to travel over the last few years due to her illness but the memories they made will always stay with us. Her greatest treasures in life were her family. Even as her illness progressed and her memories were fading, the mention of her family and especially her loving granddaughters would bring a smile to her face. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Monday, July 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gimli Lutheran Church, with Pastor Otto Christiansen officiating. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Betel Home and the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli for the care and support shown to Bernice over the last few months. Bernice, we will always miss you, but your love will remain in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bernices memory to the Alzheimer Society, 205 Edmonton St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1R4. Gilbart Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
