RICHARD STEVEN KARPYSHIN Peacefully, Richard, beloved husband of Anne Armit, passed away at home, Monday, July 23, 2001 at the age of 46, after a short but valiant battle with cancer. In addition to his wife, Rick will be dearly missed by his father Steve; mother Maxine; grandmother Goldie Lloyd; sisters Marilyn (Joe) Taylor, Sherry (Craig) Earl, Liza Brethauer, Deborah (Shannon) Stawiarski; brothers Stephen (Linda) Karpyshin, and Joel (Lisa) Karpyshin; and the many nieces and nephews who conveyed their love for Rick through a gallery of artistic expressions. Rick was born May 2, 1955 in Winnipeg and grew up on the family farm in Old Kildonan. Following his artistic aspirations and making full use of his talents and abilities, Rick graduated in 1978 with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba. Following graduation, Rick was very active in the Winnipeg arts community. He focused his creativity on pottery, sculpture and jewelry making, establishing his own studio and working to perfect his craft. Rick moved to Halifax, N.S. in 1981 for a short period to study under a third generation goldsmith from Norway. Ricks adventurous streak then took him to Frobisher Bay where he taught new techniques to local Inuit carvers. Rick traveled to Germany where he instructed in a seminar on the finer aspects of jewelry craftsmanship. Rick resettled in Winnipeg where he went on to show collections of his work at local galleries culminating in a personal showing of his work at the Main/Access gallery. His work was included in publications dedicated to fine jewelry and examples remain on display at the David Rice Studio. The later period of his career saw Rick gravitate towards the film industry where his craftsmanship was employed in the reconstruction of movie sets. His work in this genre include such movies as Vikings Grave, Avro Arrow, Marriage of Convenience and Without a Word. Ricks personal interests included a love of cooking, gardening and travel. His humour, joy for life and unbending commitment to his beliefs were an inspiration to all who shared his brief time on this earth. The funeral service will be held at Westminster United Church, N.W. Maryland and Westminster, Saturday, July 28, at 10:00 a.m., location of committal will be announced at the service. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations, if desired may be made to the Manitoba Society of Artists or the Canadian Cancer Society. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474
