Date of Passing: Jul 30, 2001
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTANLEY SHUMILAK On Monday, July 30, 2001 at the East Gate Lodge in Beausejour, MB, Stanley passed away at the age of 94 years. Uncle Stanley was born at home on a farm in Ladywood, MB. He was the second oldest of nine children born to Katharyn Shumilak (nee Niedwiecki) and Frank Shumilak. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard, Jack, Frank and Michael in infancy; and a sister Mary. He leaves to cherish his memory brothers, Anton and Edward; and a sister Helen. Stanley helped build Hwy. #44 by Beausejour using horses, scraper and also helped shingle the grain elevator in Beausejour as well as his farming. During his younger years he worked as a logger with his team of Belgian horses he drove in BC. He also worked his way across western Canada "riding the rails" and working as a harvester and treecutter. He loved to tell stories of all of his adventures and was always quick with a smile or compliment. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper during the depression years. Although he never married, he was like a father to his niece Noreen and a grandfather figure to her daughter Leyan and son Dayne. Stanley was a wise council to the family, slow to anger and quick to forgive. He was wonderful to his mother Katharyn whom he cared for after she had numerous strokes and later suffered from dementia until her passing. His patience was never lost and he was a devoted as any son could be. In his later years in residence at the East Gate Lodge he was always eager to participate in activities. He loved to sing, played games and enjoyed church, singing hymns. He knew dozens of jokes and had a quick wit. Prayers will be said on Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 p.m. from Russell Funeral Homes, Beausejour. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, August 3 at 10:00 a.m. from the St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Beausejour with Fr. Owen Steeves officiating. Interment will be in the St. Marys Parish cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Stanleys memory may be made to the East Gate Lodge, Beausejour, MB or the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB. RUSSELL FUNERAL HOMES LTD. & CREMATORIUM of Beausejour & Lac du Bonnet are in care of arrangements. 1-866-424-6271 (toll free) or 268-2263.

Great Uncle Stanley. You were an amazing person. So much of my childhood was spent playing cards and fishing with you. You were always kind and such a good cook! So proud we would always have our funny "shaking of the hands joke". You would always compliment me on my reading aloud of outdoor life to you and Uncle Anton. The day of your funeral I awoke to find a mangled monarch butterfly outside my bedroom. I set it free outside, where it was in the fresh air to pass. After your funeral I went for a walk outside and a monarch, healthy and vibrant, flew right by me. I followed it to the top of a hill outside the church where I watched it fly away. I miss you everyday and am thankful for all the great times and memories. They helped shape me into the person I am today. - Posted by: Leyan Hnatishin (Great Niece) on: Feb 18, 2012
