ALVIN (AL) DAVID WARDELL It is with great sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather on Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at the Victoria General Hospital with family by his side. Al was born in Winnipeg on December 29, 1921 and was employed with the CNR for 40 years retiring in 1978. Early in his career he worked in many Western Canadian cities before settling in Winnipeg. He served in Europe during the Second World War with the Railway Corp. In his younger years, he enjoyed skiing and playing hockey. Al and Vera moved to the Crescentwood area in 1953 where he spent many hours working as the sports convener at Crescentwood Community Club. He was devoted to his family and spent endless hours camping, fishing, golfing and traveling to Las Vegas and Phoenix with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, decorating, tinkering and was well known for his Christmas displays that adorned his home during the holiday season. Al was very devoted to his wife of 60 years, Vera; and children, Greg (Susan), Rick (Susan) and Linda Philpott (Brian) grandchildren, Dr. Carri Gradt (Karl) and Jeff Philpott; step-brothers, Bob Wardell and Gary Wardell (Janice) sisters-in-law, Helen Wickens (Burlington) and Margaret Bowles (Burlington) brother-in-law Fred Bowles (Vera) and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Victoria General Hospital for their care and kindness during his brief illness. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with interment to follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H8.
