MARIE (MARY) MATERECKI (nee MOYSEY) Marie Materecki, born March 1, 1909, died peacefully on August 14, 2001, at the age of 92. Marie lived almost all of her life in her home on Hoka Street in Transcona, one of the first houses in the area. There she cared for her aged parents, Michael and Marie Moysey until their passing. At the same time she and her husband Carl worked hard and raised their twin daughters, Dorothy and Helen. For many years she faced the responsibilities alone, as Carl was away from the family for months on end, supporting the family by working in the mining and logging camps of Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. In later years she spent much of her time caring lovingly for Carl during his long struggle with diabetes. Marie was much beloved by her neighbours for her kindness, helpfulness and genuine caring, and to many of them she was regarded as family. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marie was an avid gardener who spent summer days tending her large vegetable gardens in the lot next door to her family home. She provided her family with an un-ending supply of her cooking, baking and pickling well into her later years. Her other hobbies included sewing and needle work. Marie expressed a quiet and personal faith and was a member of the parish of St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church and founding member of the Friendly Settlers. Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband Carl; and by her daughter Dorothy. She is survived by her daughter Helen Stefaniuk; grandson Richard Stefaniuk and his wife Shelly; grandson John Stefaniuk and his wife Nancy; and great-grandchildren, Thomas and Samuel. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of Concordia Hospital, especially to those at Concordia Place who cared for Marie during her last years. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., with Fr. Ernie Hafichuk officiating. Interment to follow at the Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Concordia Hospital Foundation. Vichnaya Pamyat Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
