ADELE SHEPS (nee CHURCHILL) Aged 93, died on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Seven Oaks Hospital. She is survived by her sons, David (Montreal) and Arthur (Toronto) her grandsons, Gideon (Hong Kong) and Jonathan (Vancouver) and great-grandsons, Azriel and Benjamin (Hong Kong) and was predeceased by her husband Philip. She was born in Elizabetgrad, Russia on December 25, 1907. At the age of two, she came to Canada with her parents and brother and sister and grew up in Winnipeg. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. Coming, as she did, from a family dedicated to the rebirth of the Hebrew language and culture and the renewal of Jewish Nationhood, she founded the Junior Hadassah organization of Winnipeg while still a University student. She and her mother then lived in Palestine from 1930 to 1932, where they devoted themselves to the cause of the Revival of Jewish National life. Upon her return to Canada, she married Philip Sheps of Winnipeg. For many decades, Adele Sheps was actively engaged in Jewish Community and Zionist activities and occupied many leadership positions in these endeavours at both the local and national levels. She founded the Lillian Freiman Hadassah Chapter in Winnipeg and was President of the Winnipeg Hadassah Council, was Regional Chairman of Canadian Hadassah for the Midwestern Region of Canada and was a National Vice-President of Canadian Hadassah. The funeral will be at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cresc. on Friday, August 17 at 2:00 p.m. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff and helpers of the Sharon Home. Donations may be made to the Philip and Adele Sheps Fund of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, C400-123 Doncaster St., Winnipeg.
