Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANDREW ROY LOW It is with great sadness, we announce the death of Andrew Roy Low, beloved husband of Elsie, at Grace General Hospital, Thursday, August 16, 2001. Besides his wife Elsie, he leaves to mourn his passing, son Bruce; daughter Sandra; grandchildren, Dylan, Patrick, Joseph and Leah; many nieces and nephews and in-laws, all of whom he loved. Roy was born May 30, 1915, the youngest of eight children of Mary and Andrew Low. His early schooling was in the Moosehorn District. He attended Winnipeg Normal School in 1934 - 1935, where he attained his Teachers Certificate. He taught high school and public school in the country until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Radar Division in 1941. Roy served in the Air Force until 1946 and attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He taught radar in Clinton, ON and finally went to Germany on disarmament before the end of the war and was on the grounds of Buckingham Palace the day peace was declared. After the war, Roy attended the University of Manitoba and earned an honours degree in Mathematics and Physics; Roy and Elsie then moved to Toronto where he joined the staff of the Ryerson Institute of Technology. At that time (1950), technological training was a new concept and he really loved his work. In 1963, the family returned to Winnipeg where Roy became the first principal of the newly built Manitoba Institute of Technology (now Red River College). He held that position until 1970 and then became involved with the Metric System for the Province of Manitoba. This was a fresh challenge for him, which he enjoyed. In 1976, Roy, Elsie and Sandra went to Zambia where he was an Inspector of Colleges. Roy and Elsie were married in 1941 and after his retirement worked as a team in volunteer work at Misericordia Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 30 of this year. He was a born teacher and was interested in all facets of education all his life; even in his conversations with people he would be teaching. Roy loved bridge, puttering in the garden and his cottage at Victoria Beach. He enjoyed a full, good life. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 20 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Roys memory to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation for Geriatrics Inc., 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3.
