GEORGE W. R. BOWMAN March 5, 1927 - August 15, 2001 George W. R. Bowman passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at St. Boniface Hospital due to complications following surgery. He was predeceased by his parents William and Mary Bowman and older brother Fred; parents-in-law Robert and Eugeina Artes and brother-in-law Ronald Artes. George is survived by his wife Victoria; children, Bruce (Pearl), Craig and Wendy; grandchildren, Kathy (Eugene), Diedre, Jayson (April) Bowman, Carrie Wallace, Christopher Wallace, Kaitlin Schumacher; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Paige and Cameron. George attended Principal Sparling elementary and junior high school then took employment with the Winnipeg office of Robin Hood Flour Mills enlisting in the Canadian Technical Training Corps, Canadian Army on September 28, 1944. He remained in the service of his country from 1944 until retirement in 1974 first rising to the rank of sergeant in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. Then he was accepted for officer training and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in 1952 at the end of 30 years of service in the rank of captain. During his service in the Signal Corps he served in the #10 Military District signal station and the Primary Tape Relay Centre at National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa. After commissioning in 1952 he did a tour of duty in Viet Nam with the International Commission for Control and Supervision during 1967 - 1968 serving in Saigon, Nha Trang, Hue, and Hanoi. During 1971 - 1972 he served in Syria and Israel with the United Nations Mixed Armistice Commission. After a brief period working as a car salesman and as a group head in the temporary taxation data he spent seven years from 1977 through 1984 in university. First as an undergraduate at the University of Winnipeg where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and then at the University of Western Ontario where he received his Master of Arts Degree in sixteenth-century French history. George was a runner and a walker. He also enjoyed playing golf and woodworking. He satisfied his interest in computers as a member of the Winnipeg PC User Group of which he was a past president. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 20, at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire donations in Georges memory may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H8 or the Manitoba Runners Association, 200 Main St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4M2.
